Our community ambassador this week is Michael Truong - a student and volunteer at City of Chelmsford Mencap.
City of Chelmsford Mencap supports people with learning disabilities across mid Essex. It provides services including lifelong learning and social clubs. Its Outreach Academy runs every weekday, 50 weeks a year, offering courses ranging from functional skills to photography. It also develops specialist health projects and work experience programmes.
Michael was a Champion for City of Chelmsford Mencap’s ‘Getting It Right – From The Start’, a participant-led project to encourage more people with learning disabilities to take an annual NHS health check.
Michael put together a play that showcased the project and said “I loved developing the play and then performing it to lots of groups around Essex. We then made it into a film and it was very exciting. I hope everyone remembers how important health checks are and how to make them really good quality so they improve people’s lives.”
Michael also participates in City of Chelmsford Mencap’s Discover Health programme, which provides healthy cooking classes and fully supported and adapted sports and exercise courses. Last year, the programme delivered 680 hours of health courses to over 150 vulnerable young people and adults.
“The dance classes are really important to me as I love dancing and I’m very good at it,” Michael said. “They help keep me fit. I also love cooking and finding out about different healthy dishes from around the world. I’m a pretty good golfer too!”
