Over the last couple of days you may have seen the coverage of the NHS Minor Ailments Scheme on Facebook and in the national press.
NHS Minor Ailments Scheme is a service provided by some pharmacies, depending on their locality. It only applies to patients who do not usually pay for prescriptions (such as children, the elderly or those who have exemption certificates) and is intended to reduce unnecessary GP appointments. Eligible patients suffering from minor, specific ailments may attend for a private one-to-one consultation with the pharmacist. The pharmacist will offer the patient advice, and may, if appropriate supply a cost effective over-the- counter product without charge or the patient might be referred on to their GP if their symptoms indicate a more serious illness.
Mid Essex CCG, which covers the Chelmsford, Maldon and Braintree area, does not currently commission the scheme.
