Chelmsford event to support people living with Type 2 diabetes

Diabetes UK and NHS Mid Essex Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) are hosting a free event for people with Type 2 diabetes in Chelmsford on Wednesday 13 March.

People will learn how to maintain a healthy diet and become more confident in managing their diabetes day-to-day. There will also be an opportunity to ask diabetes experts questions and get practical up-to-date information.

Type 2 diabetes is a serious condition where there is too much glucose in the blood because the body cannot use it properly. It can lead to sight loss, amputation, stroke and kidney failure if not managed well. There are nearly 18,000 people diagnosed with diabetes in the mid Essex area – Braintree District, Chelmsford City and Maldon District – and around 90 per cent of them have Type 2.

Rebecca Jones, Diabetes UK’s Improving Care Manager, East of England, said:

“We know living with Type 2 diabetes can be hard, so this event aims to help people think about how they manage their condition and what they could do differently.

“Hearing from health experts and other people with Type 2 diabetes can offer a fresh insight, which can help people take a transformational path to their healthiest self.

“Everyone’s journey is different, but better access to care, education and support can help people live well with Type 2 diabetes.”

Dr Hollie McNaughton-Garratt, a Chelmsford GP and Clinical Lead at Mid Essex CCG, said:

“We know there are many thousands of people diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in mid Essex – and being diagnosed with the condition can have a life-changing effect on people.

“Through this event, we want to give more people with the condition a chance to get together and meet some of the healthcare professionals who provide care and support in mid Essex.”

The event is free and open to any adult living with Type 2 diabetes, or people who care for others with the condition.
