If you have an illness that won’t go away and isn’t life threatening, contact your GP surgery first to make an appointment. Most GP surgeries offer extended opening hours for a limited range of services.

Your local GP surgery provides a range of services, including general medical advice and treatment, prescriptions, referral to a specialist or hospital (where appropriate), and injections and tests (such as immunisations, blood tests or cervical smears). Remember to tell your doctor if you have taken or are taking any self-care treatment.

If you require a GP outside of normal opening hours, please call the GP out-of-hours service NHS 111.

Please use the below map to locate you nearest GP. Alternatively, click on a link in the menu on the left-hand side of the page to view GP practices within each area of mid Essex.

GP Services FAQ

  • How do I find a GP?

  • How do I register with a GP?

Contact the GP surgery and ask to register with them. They will ask you to complete a GMS1 registration form with details such as:

  • Your name and address
  • Your date of birth
  • Your NHS number (if you know it)
  • Other information, such as the name and address of your previous GP
  • They may also ask you for your NHS medical card or your NHS number. However, you don't need either of these to register with a GP or to get NHS treatment.
  • Once you have been accepted by the GP surgery your medical records will be transferred to the new surgery from your previous surgery.

  • What if the surgery doesn't accept me?

Sometimes, you may not be able to register with a GP surgery, for example, if:

  • You live outside the area that the surgery covers
  • The surgery is not accepting new patients
  • You will need to register with another GP surgery in your area instead.
