Twelve Days of Christmas Care – on the sixth day, accessing GP services when your practice is closed

As part of NHS Mid Essex CCG’s Twelve Days of Christmas Care campaign, today we’re highlighting how you can access GP care outside of normal GP practice hours.

Twelve days of Christmas care

People living in mid Essex are able to get help and support from a GP 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by using the GP Out of Hours service.

The quickest and easiest way of reaching a GP when your local surgery is closed is by calling NHS 111. With their help and guidance, you can get an appointment booked with an out-of-hours GP if you need one, or they can help you to access other services.

Dr Ike Adiukwu (pictured right) is a local community GP who also works within the Out of Hours service as a Senior Clinician and Lead Medical Adviser. He said: “The GP Out of Hours service is boosted with 161217DrAdiukwu12DaysofChristmasCareadditional cover at times like Christmas and New Year so that we can support those who need it the most over the holidays.

“By calling NHS 111 you can speak to someone about your health needs and they will book appointments with our service, or they can signpost to other parts of the NHS that can offer help and support.

“We provide out-of-hours services within clinics from various locations in the mid Essex area, or we can visit patients in their own homes when it’s clinically approropriate.”

In the past year, 40,219 people have seen an out-of-hours GP in mid Essex.

The GP Out of Hours service is just one element of a wide range NHS services available to people throughout Christmas and New Year. Please visit https://bit.ly/2dJDVBj for more details of what is available to you.
